Wow, I never thought of it this way...

This image is from a fellow photographer. Now, normally I've always said I've never cared much about people shooting over my shoulder cuz I know that happens, but this is an interesting take on why guests should just be guests sometimes.

"16 cameras visible in this shot.

The fact that lots of people are shooting at the wedding is not new. What I want to point out is what the cost is, both to the client and the guests. Look closely at the photo and you will see that those with cameras are looking at the settings, chimping, or framing their shots. One guy is actually looking at me!

What they are not looking at, and witnessing, and enjoying, and taking a mental image of, is the bride walking down the aisle with her dad. They are all missing it! And this is the image the bride will receive—not smiling friendly faces—happy to see her so happy. Instead, a bunch of people looking down.

It saddens me.

The camera makes everyone a tourist in other people's reality, and eventually in one's own."

Pretty good point, right?

  1. I asked prior to my wedding (some wanted to take pics for whatever reason...) but they whipped them out when it came to the reception. One my husband's cousin called me a name because I put my foot down about her taking pictures. We had throw aways on the table but they were meant to be used as the evening went on but not in the way of my photographers.

I had fill ins because mine dropped out on thursday because of pink eye.

Yes my wedding was a nightmare but one day we are going to renew our vows at Disney world.

  2. A good question ... in the days of so many DSLRs and point and shoots, can special events be controlled like that? Do we have to resort to having the ushers at wedding inform guests that they can't shoot during the wedding? I realize I would be one who would have to put my camera down. I have been on the side of 'capturing' a moment to have it ruined by someone's flash at that same said moment.
